"This restaurant is the real deal because its menu is 100% organic, seed oil-free, and they have a scratch kitchen," Kerry Clasby told The Malibu Times in July, between bites of wagyu skirt steak and tallow potatoes. Clasby founded the Intuitive Forager and manages The Malibu Fig Ranch at Sterling Farms, which sits at the same intersection she was eating at: Heathercliff and Pacific Coast Highway.
She was eating at The Royal Egg Cafe, which opened in Point Dume Plaza on June 15. It was one of three changes at the corner this summer. Two galleries opened near the post office, and Malibu Eye Center moved out of the plaza and down the coast. Together they shift what the corner is good for. You still come for the mail and the groceries. Now there is also a table to sit at between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., and art to see across the parking lot.
How the Morning Hours Line Up Now
The corner's appeal has always been that it runs on predictable hours. With The Royal Egg added, those hours now overlap through the middle of the day. Here is the sequence based on each business's published hours:
| Opens | Business | Address | Published hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 a.m. | Pavilions, with a Starbucks Cafe inside | 29211 Heathercliff Rd. | 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily |
| 7 a.m. | Lily's Malibu | 29211 Heathercliff Rd. | 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon–Sat; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sun |
| 7 a.m. | SunLife Organics | 29169 Heathercliff Rd., Suite 110 | 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily |
| 8 a.m. | The Royal Egg Cafe | 29169 Heathercliff Rd., Suite 106 | 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily |
| 9 a.m. | Point Dume Post Office | 29160 Heathercliff Rd. | 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mon–Fri; 9 a.m. to noon Sat; closed Sun |
| 11 a.m. | La Nena Cantina | 29169 Heathercliff Rd., #102 | 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mon–Thu; to 10:30 p.m. Fri–Sat; to 8:30 p.m. Sun |
| 11 a.m. | Papa Razzi's Pizza | 29169 Heathercliff Rd., Unit 104 | Listed 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
Look at the post office and The Royal Egg side by side. The post office counter opens at 9, an hour after the cafe. On Saturdays the post office closes at noon and the cafe keeps serving until 2. That means a full breakfast fits before or after the weekly trip to the counter without moving the car. On Sundays, when the post office is closed and Lily's opens at 9, The Royal Egg still opens at 8.
Lily's has its own long history at the corner. By its own account it reopened as a Latin restaurant in 1999. The Royal Egg doesn't replace any of these places. It fills the hours between the coffee stops and the 11 a.m. openings at La Nena and Papa Razzi's.
What The Royal Egg Brings Over the Hill
The Royal Egg started in Westlake Village. The Malibu Times reported that some customers of that flagship were glad they no longer had to cross the Santa Monica Mountains for the food. The founders, Jaron and Bree Gugliuzza, describe it as family-owned and operated.
The Times named a few signature dishes. One is The Malibu Ranch Hand, with wild boar sausage, eggs, black beans, and turmeric rice. Another is The Patriot, with two pasture-raised eggs, tallow potatoes, and a cheddar jalapeño biscuit or nine-grain toast. The Keto Bowl comes with crispy pork belly over Spanish-style cauliflower "rice." The menu also covers vegan, vegetarian, paleo, and gluten-free diets. The kids' menu includes a ricotta huckleberry pancake. On the drinks list are a dirty turmeric golden latte, a bourbon-maple latte, and sparkling rhubarb lemonade.
Two practical details matter if you plan to come often:
- The patio is dog-friendly. It sits near the Emily Shane fountain, and there is indoor seating as well.
- Ordering direct skips the surcharge. The owners told the Times that ordering through the cafe's website or its app avoids extra Google or Yelp surcharges. You can get the app by texting "Royal Egg" to 33733. The cafe's phone number is (424) 235-2309.
The Building Next to the Post Office Turned Creative
On the other side of Heathercliff, surfboard artist Bobbi Bennett opened Stoked Malibu Gallery at 29170 Heathercliff Rd., Suite 6, next to the post office. She shows her own work alongside Will Pierce, Kristina Grace, and the photographer Guy Webster, who was her mentor. The space has a sculpture garden and shares a building with Malgosia Design. Bennett says that makes the "whole building full of creatives."
As of the Times' July 26 report, the gallery was open by appointment only, with regular hours planned. To book a visit, the Times lists Bennett's number as (805) 680-3587. Bennett told the Times that much of her work now is art consulting, including helping clients who are rebuilding after the Palisades Fire choose art for their new homes.
Bennett has also partnered with Cliff & Christie Graham's ART Gallery, which opened in Point Dume in July. "Having been part of the Malibu community for nearly 20 years, we've seen firsthand how much people value creativity, culture, and meaningful experiences," Christie Graham told the Times. Cliff Graham is an artist. The couple has written two children's books, one of them illustrated by Cliff, and Christie said proceeds from book sales have gone to help children in disasters and wars since 2008. The Times did not print a street address for the Grahams' space, so contact the gallery before visiting.
The One Errand That Moved Away
The corner also lost something this summer. Malibu Eye Center, owned by longtime Malibu optometrist Dr. Gregory O'Conner, moved from Point Dume Plaza to the Ocean View building at 24955 Pacific Coast Highway, Suite A-103.
At the new location, the practice is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with lunch from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with lunch from 1 to 2 p.m., and Sunday hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It accepts both appointments and walk-ins. If an eye exam used to fit into a Heathercliff errand run, it now takes its own trip down PCH. Sunday hours make that easier to schedule.
Taken together, the three changes point one way. An appointment-based medical practice left, and a breakfast spot and an art cluster arrived. The plaza now offers more reasons to stay a while.
The Name on the Street Sign
The Royal Egg's patio sits beside the Emily Shane fountain, and the intersection itself carries her name. In August 2011, Patch reported on the unveiling of an Emily Shane Way street sign at Heathercliff Road and PCH.
The Emily Shane Foundation is a 501(c)(3) with two missions, SEA and Driving Change. SEA pairs underserved middle-school students with individual academic tutors and mentors. Sessions generally meet for an hour twice a week, and Malibu is one of the communities it serves. The foundation's 10th annual Wings Over Malibu fundraiser was held at Café Habana on May 29, 2025, after Duke's Malibu became unavailable. In its June 2025 report, The Malibu Times said the foundation was facing a funding crisis and was looking for board members, volunteers, long-term sponsors, and grant writers. Its events page now shows a gallery labeled "Wings Over Malibu 2026."
A Saturday That Fits the Windows
On Saturdays the hours are tightest, so the order of stops matters:
- Breakfast at The Royal Egg starting at 8.
- The post office between 9 and noon. It's closed Sunday, so this is the last counter window until Monday.
- If you've arranged a visit with Bobbi Bennett ahead of time, stop at Stoked Malibu Gallery next to the post office.
- Pavilions any time before 10 p.m., since it has the longest hours at the corner.
- La Nena Cantina or Papa Razzi's from 11 a.m. onward if the day turns into lunch.
Hours change, especially at newer businesses. Before planning a visit around a narrow window, check the business's own site.
The businesses at Heathercliff and PCH tell you a lot about how a part of Point Dume lives day to day. At Mark Gruskin we follow those changes as closely as we follow sales. If you'd like to talk about what this corner and the streets around it mean for your own plans on Point Dume, let's schedule an appointment.
